Notes
Tom, Martin and Steven made a visit to kalitumba village to Conduct a triggering session in hand washing. When they arrived in the village, they found some of the committee members waiting at one of the vhts homes. The turn up was still low so all the kibo staff members decided to moved around the village checking on a few homes with some facilities under construction as well as mobilizing the residents about the time of meeting as well as encouraging most of them to come to the meeting place. After moving around, Tom and the rest of the kibo staff members came back to the meeting place and it was not long they were joined by other committee members as well as resident. The chairman of the village opened the meeting by thanking kibo for the good work it has done in his village as well as thanking kibo for the more lessons it had taken to his village like the lessons about hand washing. After because of time , Tom was invited to start the triggering session but first introduced Martin and Steven to the community and started with the triggering session. He asked the residents if their hands were clean and many put up there hands and he requested one resident to offer and come in front of the group to show the residents that his hands were clean. Tom requested him to wash his hands using plane water in a clean container. The water that the resident washed his hands in turned brown and Tom poured the water in a plain whit plastic bag and showed it to the residents. The residents realized that his hands were dirty even though he had thought they were clean. After Tom asked the residents if the resident’s hands were clean after washing with plain water and most said yes. Tom requested the resident to was his hands using soap in a clean container as after poured the water he had washed his hands into a plain white plastic bag and showed the residents which color of the water it was. The water had turned dark brown indicating that actually his hands remained dirty even after washing with plain water and that washing with soap removed even more dirt from the residents hands. After Tom asked the resident to wash his hands once again with plain water and poured the water in the plastic bag. Tom showed the residents all the four different colors of the water rom one resident’s hands. They realized that washing with soap only can throughly clean the hands. Tom also demonstrated using how having long nails and not washing with soap can spread diseases as well as other demonstrations like wiping a child. The main purpose for the triggering in hand washing was to get residents realize that washing hands is vital to a persons health. Tom also discussed with them how diseases can be transmitted through hands and how they can prevent them. They realized that the best preventive measure was to wash their hands with soap especially after visiting a latrine as well as after doing any activity that can contaminate a persons hands. Later Tom gave them the jericans was an appropriation and support from kibo. Tom requested the community to be creative when constructing the hand washing facilities but emphasized the value of good facilities. After Tom, Martin and Steven left for jinja.
