Notes
Tom made a visit to kalitumba village to check on the progress of sanitation and hygiene as well as checking on the progress being made especially in the construction of hand washing facilities (tippy-taps). When he arrived to the village, he found out that there was a funeral in the neighboring village and most of the residents had gone for the burial. The chairman of the village and some other committee members had not left for the funeral so they encouraged Tom that they can still go ahead and carry out the follow up. They started off with the homes around the trading center where they found some new hand washing facilities already set up. Tom encouraged the residents about the standard of the facility if it is to last long as well as if it is to be effectively used. Tom also shared with the residents about how ash can also be used in place of soap for the residents that can not afford the soap. One resident was very shocked to hear that ash can also be used in hand washing and Tom encouraged her to try washing her hands with soap while the rest of the committee members witnessed. She was very happy later to find out that her hands washed very clean than just plain water. Tom and the committee members continued moving around and they found a home where a lady has invested in constructing a very permanent latrine structure using bricks and mud. Tom encouraged her to use cement while constructing the last few lines of the wall to give the structure more stability and strength. Because the chairman and the rest of the committee members also wanted to go to the funeral, they ended and Tom left for jinja.
