Enock and Martin went to this village to continue sensitizing, encouraging, monitoring, emphasizing all the community residents on the importance and benefits of proper sanitation and hygiene. They focused so much on homes which appeared in the second survey without latrines. They used the data collected during the second survey and printed out names of the homes without latrines. They shared this information with the local leaders and gave them a copy so that even though the kibo guys are not on ground, they can still visit those homes to check, encourage their fellow residents to improve on the sanitation of their community. Some of the VHTs and LC’s where shocked to hear some names of their family members appeared and didn’t have latrines. The kibo stuff challenged them to take the lead and encourage their fellow residents, friends and families to construct good standard facilities in there homes.
After a short meeting, they moved around those homes without latrines to find out what they are planning to do, ask if they have challenges and try to solve some, ask questions why some of the people are slow to respond to change etc.
some of the challenges they said was, the pick axes broke during the process of digging latrines since the place is so rocky. This slowed the work of most families in this area. They encouraged some of the residents to look for areas with less rocks to construct good standard latrines. They also found out that some families heads have been lazy and only working in their gardens, spending less hours in their homes. For those people, they encouraged them to have spare more times in their homes and improve on the hygiene and sanitation since clean homes are always welcoming visitors. Before that, they reminded the residents on the diseases which are spread due to open defection and poor Sanitation which are diarrhea, trachoma, dysentery, cholera, typhoid and many more which may result to even death of their beloved ones. Due to many diseases they also result to a lot of medical expenses hence creating a lot of poverty in many families. Since there is a lot of medical expenses, this has led to school drop outs, Famine, less productivity in their gardens and more. Although some people are still struggling to have good facilities, There are some homes which have greatly embraced and improved, constructed good latrines, shower areas, new dish racks, kitchen areas well smeared, clean compounds and proper use of rubbish pits and hence increasing development in homes. Enock was so appreciative to them and encouraged them to also teach the rest of there community members to have good standard facilities.
