Notes
Enock, Martin and Nate went to kagulu village to continue checking on latrine construction, dish racks, shower areas, kitchen areas, hand washing facilities, rubbish pits in homes which where still constructing these facilities to see whether there is progress. As they got there, they met with the chairman, VHTs who walked them around the community. They saw good new dish racks which were constructed in different homes, four new latrines which are well constructed, five new latrine pits which are under construction, rubbish pits, shower areas well smeared and used cement on top, clean compounds. The home which had no soak pits for proper drainage on their latrines, they taught them how to construct a pit which all water from the shower area goes. This helps to keep the shower room dry and hygienic. They continue walking around in homes teaching standardization of facilities, encouraging the residents to construct sustainable facilities instead of constructing things which may break in a short period of time hence repeating the same things over and again. They helped to explain to the residents how much expenditure they spend on medication, time wasted repeating the same work and spending money on the same things they worked on before. They encouraged them to construct good facilities which will last them longer and this will help them be more productive and efficient in their gardens, reduce cost expenditure and hence increasing development in their community. There was a lady by the names Afuwa who we met construct her dish rack since his husband was acting irresponsible. She is working so hard to see that she can be able to improve the sanitation and hygiene of their home. Enock spent sometime with the family where the husband comes from challenging them to encourage their son to construct good facilities in his home. He spoke to the local leaders to also continue encouraging, monitoring and evaluating the progress in that home. After they walked to homes near the swap to also continue checking on the latrine construction progress. This area had some homes which were still practicing open defection. We managed to meet the owners of those homes, spoke to them and came to an agreement. They say in one week they will have completed the construction of their latrines and proper shower areas. Generally most people in this community have greatly embraced the program, taken the initiative to construct good facilities and improved their sanitation and hygiene.
