Introduction
Lorna went to this village to teach on HIV transmission and the Immune system. This was Lorna’s second visit in this village.
Overview
On arrival Lorna met with Tom a mobilizer who took her to his home and from their engaged in many conversations including asking about hygiene and sanitation. Tom said they were not doing bad , apart from the fact that they no longer have pickaxes that were given to them by Tom during CLTS now WASH. He added that the people who last took them did not return them. Lorna told him that on the next visit she will move around with him to check on the sanitation. At about 1:30 they walked back to the meeting place as the community had been told that the meeting would start at 1pm.
After a few more minutes of waiting the chairman decided that the meeting should start as others continued to come. Lorna started with the topic HIV transmission and she asked for the different ways HIV / AIDS is transmitted. They gave having sex without protection with an infected person, they gave sharing of sharp instruments, blood transfusion among others. They also looked at ways through which HIV is not transmitted like by shaking hands, hugging each other, being near one with HIV , washing clothes of an infected person among others. About washing clothes, some people however said that one can get HIV if there is blood on the clothes. Lorna however said she has not heard of this one yet. When Lorna asked any questions from transmission, one man asked if one can get HIV through kissing and another said unless they were bitten on the mouth and also whether the other had Wounds. They looked at the fluids that aid in transmission. They looked at semen, breast milk, blood and rectal fluids.Lorna stressed saliva does not transmit HIV.
They then looked at the immune system and how it fights diseases , they looked at the role of the red blood cells and the white blood cells. The red blood cells transport oxygen and let out carbon dioxide while the white blood cells fight off diseases. They looked at the different types of white blood cells and their role. They looked at the CD4 cell which is the captain of the immune system and how HIV likes to attack mostly this cell. They looked at the Big eater, the T8 cell among others. Lorna encouraged that if a person was HIV positive, they need to take care of themselves by treating every sickness that affects them. They then acted out the Elephant game as Lorna called out volunteers to act this out. Some people were shy but eventually agreed to role play.
After the game Lorna asked what the difference between HIV and AIDS was and if it were possible for one to have HIV but not AIDs. Many people were confused and asked Lorna to tell them. She told them it is very possible and that HIV was the virus that causes AIDS and AIDs is a combination of many diseases. She added that by the time a person dies , it’s not AIDs that killed the person but the different diseases.
Conclusion
Lorna thanked everyone for coming and also Tom the mobilizer encouraged the community members to come in time for the next lesson. One man also asked to see the female condom, Lorna said the lesson on condom use will come.
