Notes
Tom made a visit to igerera village to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements as well as construction a demonstration dish rack with the residents so that they can improve on the dish racks standards as well as sustainability. When Tom are in the village, he moved from the upper section towards the chairman’s place and a long the way he saw many new facilities under construction. He was able to see several new latrine pits as well as new latrines, newly constructed dish racks as well as dug rubbish pits. But as he looked at the dish racks, he realized that some were below standard and therefore thought of working with the community to improve on the dish rack standards. Tom also thought of encouraging the residents to start constructing the dish racks without being put in the ground but rather constructing dish racks on top of the ground as this would prevent termites from eating the poles which has been the number one hinderance to dish rack longevity. When he reached the chairman’s place, he shared with him about having a dish rack construction demonstration in the upper section at one of the residents homes. The chairman agreed and mobilized some residents and together they went to the home where they were going to construct from. The resident had already cut poles and therefore it was easy. Tom first shared with them of the new idea of constructing dish racks without inserting the poles in the ground as well as it’s benefits. They were all excited about the new idea and they constructed the dish rack. This will help in controlling termites by moving the dish rack whenever the termites climb on the poles. The residents and the chairman were very happy about the new idea and even those that had contributed there dish racks by inserting the poles in the ground committed to removing them and bringing them to the top of the ground as is one of the few ways of controlling termites.
