Tom made a visit to kalitumba village to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements as well as facility constructions and improvements. His main purpose was to be intentional on discussing about how to maintain dish racks from being attacked by termites so that they can serve longer and stay stronger. When he arrived in the village, he was joined by the committee members and the chairman of the village. They discussed about which home to visit and learn from about dish rack maintenance and construction. They decided to visit the home of one resident called Fred who has a dish rack but was constructed with poles in the ground. When they reached mr Fred’s dish rack. They soon realized that termites had already started eating the poles. The residents were very shocked because mr Fred’s dish rack was just recently constructed. Tom asked the residents what can be done to control such pests from destroying the dish rack. Many gave different answers like using old engine oil to using metallic poles. Most of the maintenance methods they were offering were expensive and many people could not afford them. Tom then shared with them about the idea of constructing dish racks on top of the ground instead of inside the ground. Tom emphasized the benefit of that design by saying that when you see termites starting to crawl on the poles, you move the dish rack to another position just a few feet away and this is done every time termites are seen starting to climb on the poles. Termites can take up to a few weeks to again move which in them end over time they quit and the dish rack can stay safe and strong. This prompted many residents who has there dish racks in the ground and are already being eaten by termites to cut the poles out of the ground and move the dish racks because they realized it was one of the cheapest ways the control the termites. This idea seemed to excite many residents. Tom also encouraged those that need to construct new ones to do it the new way to avoid the inconveniences of having to cut out of the ground. Other facilities where also checked on like new latrines being roofed etc.
