Notes
Introduction
Lorna was in this village to teach about facts and myths concerning HIV / AIDS and HIV transmission.
Overview
On the previous visit Last Lorna told the chairman it would be her last one since people were not responding well. She however told the chairman to call her if they were ready to learn. The chairman Tuli called Lorna and told her the people were ready to learn and that she should go back that they were ready for her. Lorna reached and found the chairman and his 2 wives waiting for her. They welcomed her and they sat as they waited for others to join them. The members started coming one by one and finally the lesson begun. Lorna started by asking the community what they know about this disease. They said they know nothing and that Lorna should tell them. Lorna informed them that these are things that are not new and that life Skills lessons is very participatory. They then looked at the myths and truths ; some of the truths looked at were; Women and girl children are the most at risk of getting HIV than men, another truth was HIV has no cure but there are treatments available , another truth was about despite the fact that Africa’s is most affected by this disease, HIV is also on the rise in other non African countries. Some of the myths were; prostitutes are number one at spreading HIV , that a man infected with HIV can heal of Aids if he slept with a virgin, another myth was that no one had HIV in Uganda. Lorna asked for other myths and they mentioned traditional healers being able to heal this disease.
On HIV transmission they looked at the ways by which HIV is transmitted. She asked the community members some of the ways one lady then said through infected blood, Tom one of the youths around said through sharing sharp instruments. Lorna thanked them for their answers as all of them were correct. Lorna added through having sex with an infected person, blood transfusion. She added however that for HIV to get into ones body, there should be a port of entry either a cut or a wound. Lorna then mentioned some of the ways HIV is not transmitted like ;shaking hands, hugging, sharing the same utensils , sitting next to an infected person. Some people were of the view that one can acquire HIV by drinking in the same cup if saliva is involved. They discussed about this and concluded there was no HIV in Saliva. Lorna said they will look at the fluids in which HIV is or can be transmitted through and those that don’t.
Conclusion
Lorna thanked the members for coming and encouraged them to keep time on the next visit. The chairman thanked Lorna for being patient with them and promised that they will work hard at keeping time.
