Notes
Enock went to this community to continue teaching, encouraging, assessing and guiding the residents towards improving their sanitation and hygiene. The focus is 100% latrine construction and open defection free. When he reached, he met with the local leaders and VHTs to walk home to home to check on the progress of latrine construction and other facilities. They first had a discussion where Enock challenged all the leaders and reminded them on their responsibilities to also take the lead and monitor, encourage their fellow residents to speed up through constructing good standard structures. The leaders vowed to take the lead, meet all their cabinet members to get a day and walk around even though the WASH staff is not on ground that day. After the discussion, they walked in homes around the trading centre which didn’t have latrines to talk to those families and find out which plans they have. They met with most of the heads in those homes to remind them about the diseases which may occur due to poor sanitation like cholera, dysentery, diarrhea and more which also cause continuous medication expenditure hence increase of poverty. This has also increased continuous missing of school in children due to many diseases and no concentration in school leading to poor school performance. In addition they taught the residents about the importance, values and benefits of all the facilities in there homes. As they continued walking around, they met two residents who have open pits but they are planing to construct on them. They guided them how to construct good foundation for the latrine so that they don’t loose their latrines due to poor construction. They also encouraged them to use strong materials like bricks, cement and sand because they have deep pits and scarcity of grass to roof. Despite of that, there are some people who have taken all the lessons so serious which have lead to behavioral change. Our success is having all the facilities in their homes but goal is to educate these people and change/transform from their old behaviors of open defection. Those homes with good standard latrines where also encouraged to continue using Ash in their latrines to chase flies and maintenance of hygiene in the latrine. Generally there has been a great improvement and increase in latrine construction and other facilities. The local leader appreciate the good work done by the Water sanitation and hygiene staff are doing in there village .
