- Introduction Lorna went to this village to teach on the relationship between HIV/ AIDS and STDs. Overview Lorna reached and decided to move around checking on the home facilities as well as mobilizing the community members to come attend the lesson of the day. While moving around she discovered that there was also an organization going around doing a research on the prevalence of Ulcers in the community. After moving around Lorna came back to the meeting. After about 30 minutes the meeting begun. The chairman Iswaya welcomed Lorna and urged the members to pay attention. He also thanked them for coming and told them not to sit on this information but tell those who were not able to come. He then invited Lorna to start her lessons. Lorna introduced the topic of the day the relationship between HIV and STDs. However before starting the new topic, Lorna asked about the preview of the previous lesson. She asked them what was it that they studied about. They responded that they learnt how HIV is transmitted and they mentioned ways like; having unprotected sex with an infected person, sharing sharp instruments, blood transfusion, injecting drugs with the same syringe among others. They also looked at the four fluids in which HIV is transmitted as; blood,breast milk, semen and vaginal fluids. Also they added that they looked at the immune system and how it fights off diseases and how HIV affects the immune system. Lorna thanked the members and then started on the new topic of the day. Lorna asked the community members about the different STDs and they answered; syphilis , gonorrhea, herpes, chancroid among others. Lorna looked at these as they are most common STDs. Another member mentioned Scabies and leprosy as STDs. Lorna asked the group if he was right and they said no. The topic became exciting when Lorna asked what the signs to these diseases were. Syphilis ; they mentioned sores on the genitals, sweating in the legs and that if anyone else wears this persons shoes they also got syphillis. Lorna and the group argued on this and finally we agreed that this was incorrect. They also mentioned itching body rash. Lorna added that the symptoms of syphilis show between 9 - 10 days., hair loss, fever, chills , possible death if not treated among others. Under gonorrhea, they looked at yellow discharge from the penis and vagina, symptoms usually showing 2-14 days. There was an argument however on the days it takes before the symptoms showed up. Some of the men told Lorna that it only took hours before one started feeling the signs especially when it came to passing out urine. This sent everyone laughing. This then led to another question whereby, one man asked if it was possible for one to get sexually involved with another woman who had an STD and then went home to his wife and got sexually involved with them, would he have passed on the STD?. The members all said yes. They went on other signs like; possible blindness in newborns, sterility for the men among others. They also looked at herpes simplex. They looked at the symptoms like; small painful blisters on genitals or mouth, it’s a viral infection, has no cure, severe neurological damage to new bones if exposed through the birth canal. Lorna asked if herpes has a cure and some said yes while others no. One man said herpes(Kisipi) is like AIDs itself which is true. Conclusion Lorna concluded by asking how many have gone to the hospital to find out if they had STDs. Some said they did while others said there is no machine at their health centre to test STDs. The chairman however refuted this and said that it is there and that while testing for HIV, they test along with STDs like gonorrhoea. Lorna therefore urged the community to go for checkups as one having an STD is more at risk of getting HIV than one without. The open sores give the HIV virus a port of entry where as for the discharges, they also carry the virus in the fluids hence the person is not only at risk of getting HIV but also passing it on.
