Notes
Tom made a visit to igerera village to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements as well as checking on facility constructions. When he arrived in the village, he first visited the chairman’s home were he found the chairman and other committee members waiting for Tom. Before moving around, they first discussed about the progress of the program and how the residents are perceiving it or participating in it. They said the people were greatly embracing the program as well as fully participating in sanitation and hygiene improvements because they saw the value of sanitation and hygiene during the triggering session. They also said that the committee members and the chairman of the village have also played a big role in improving on the sanitation and hygiene of the village as they move around encouraging residents to improve on their sanitation and hygiene standards. After the discussion they decided to move around the village. They said they move in the central section of the village upwards to the main road. In the first homes they visited, they found new pits as well as several newly constructed latrines, dish racks constructed and rubbish pits dug. Tom decided to focus on dish racks that day as many constructed dishes racks were not to standard. He was also teaching about a new dish rack construction method that minimizes nails without affecting the quality of the dish rack. Many of the residents were very impressed with the new method and most said they will use that method because it minimizes nails therefore reduces the cost of constructing a dish rack. In one home Tom found when a man and his wife were constructing a dish rack and he used that opportunity to demonstrate to them the other method. They were very thankful. Also in several homes Tom and the committee members found new pits and always encouraged the residents to construct and finish the facilities as it was important. They also found one three families that had joined efforts helping each other to dig and construct the latrines. Tom was very thankful for the work the committee members were doing in encouraging fellow residents as well as leading by example. After the visit Tom left for jinja.
