- Introduction
Lorna was in this village to teach about women and HIV/AIDS.
Overview
Lorna reached the village and met with the chairman and the VHT. They then moved to a few homes calling on people to come for the meeting. The meeting started at 1:30 and Lorna started with a review of the previous topic which was on the relationship between HIV/AIDS and STDs. Lorna asked them to remind her of the different STDs and they mentioned Syphillis, Gonorrhea, Herpes, Chancroid among others. Also they mentioned some of the symptoms of these STDs like; sores on the genitals, swelling of the testicles, penis, itching of the genitals, rashes among others. Lorna also reminded them that is very easy for a man to notice these symptoms but for the woman it’s vey hard and the signs take a long time before they begin to show. Lorna however encouraged women to carry out tests Incase they feel or have any of those signs. Lorna thanked them for remembering the lesson she taught previously and added that they should also practice what is taught to them. After the review Lorna started on the topic of the day women and HIV/AIDS.
Lorna started by asking why are women more at risk of getting HIV/AIDS than men?. One man said because they are easily lured and the other men seemed to be in agreement which did not go well with some of the women. The women said that well sometimes why they accept these offers is because they are not given enough at home hence accepting such proposes and then falling victim. Lorna asked them for other reasons and they said the love for money. Lorna agreed with these reasons and said it is true as those are among the reasons. She mentioned others which are divided into 2 biological factors and physical factors. Some of the ones under biological are; women’s mucous membrane is a larger port of entry than that of the man, some cultures that carry out Female genital mutilation this ends up tearing during sex and one can end up contacting the disease, women were created in a way that they are narrow on the inside hence it’s hard to know whether they have an STD whereby one with an STD is at a higher risk of getting HIV than one without , a virgin can easily tear creating a port of entry for HIV. They also looked at other factors like; exchange of sex for money because of poverty, bride price where women are taken as property, taboos about speaking about sex. Lorna asked the members if this was true some said yes though others were not in agreement with some of the reasons especially women having a say about sex in a home. Lorna did not go deep into this but left it open for them to think about it and they will discuss more about it in the next visit.
Conclusion
After the lesson, Lorna sat together with a few members to strategize on a way they can get to get more people attending these lessons. Lorna asked how many VHTs are in the village and she was told 5 , she also asked how many members are on the local council committee and they said 11. Lorna asked how many from the committee have attended these lessons ever since the lessons started. The chairman said maybe three. Lorna asked the chairman to meet with his committee, tell them of what is going on in the village and how they can work together to make this program move forward successfully. The chairman thanked Lorna for these remarks and advice and promised to sit a meeting on Saturday and will let Lorna know the out come.
