Introduction Lorna went to this village to teach on HIV prevention. Overview When Lorna reached the village, she started by moving around mobilizing people to come to the meeting but also Che king on their sanitation and hygiene. Most of the homes have latrines but not many shower areas, rubbish pits and most of the dish racks are movable ones. Lorna moved along with the chairman and one VHT. She encouraged them to move around once in a while checking on the hygiene and sanitation of their fellow community members and encouraging them where they were found lacking. After moving in those few homes, they went back to the meeting place. At the meeting place after people had gathered, Lorna started by reviewing the previous lesson before she started on the lesson of the day HIV prevention. Lorna asked how can we prevent ourselves from getting HIV/AIDS?. One of the community members a student said by avoiding sharing sharp instruments,another said use condoms if one is not sure of their partners status or whenever necessary. Lorna thanked them for their answers and also added to avoid too much drinking which sometimes may lead one to engage in sexual acts and Lorna said this does not mean whoever drinks alcohol is capable of involving themselves in sexual practices but this is just a precaution. Lorna also mentioned avoiding many sexual partners, being faithful to each others partner, treating any STDs as one with STDs is at a higher risk of contracting HIV than one without. One of the youth then asked Lorna whether by sharing the same food with an HIV infected person they can also get infected., Lorna pushed this back to the group and the said no but unless one has TB then they can catch TB but not HIV/AIDS. Another community member then asked if it was possible to have TB without HIV ? . Lorna said yes it was possible because TB is airborne unlike HIV /AIDS. After this Lorna taught on the correct use of a condom where she asked anyone to demonstrate the effective use of a condom from when they are purchasing it. One volunteer said the first thing is to check how many condoms were inside the pack then he can go home and use it. The chairman said the first thing he would do was check on the expiration date. Lorna thanked the chairman for his answer and asked for another volunteer but they seemed shy. Lorna reminded them not to be shy as this was for everyone’s benefit. Lorna then demonstrated the proper use of a condom as She added that after checking the expiration date, check if the condom has an airbag, open carefully not rushingly as it could tear, find out the proper way it rolls out, ensure that their is some space left at the tip of the condom and then put it on. Lorna reminded them to pull out before the erection is not completely done. Lorna mentioned that a condom is not 100% effective because it is usually not used in the correct way and manner. Lorna also demonstrated the female condom use. They members were surprised that there are also female condoms. Lorna however urged them to be faithful to their partners. Conclusion At the end of the lesson, some members were asking Lorna to carry with her next time a test kit to test their status. Lorna said that Kibo does not do this but they can go through their chairman and arrange this. Other members were asking for condoms however Lorna said she does not give these out either but urged them to go to the nearest health facility and get one or their VHTs.
