Overview
Lorna went to this village to continue with the topic communication skills. Lorna found the chairman and his secretary already waiting for them at the meeting place. After waiting a few minutes they were joined by other community members and the meeting begun. Lorna started by reviewing the previous topic where she asked the community members on what they discussed about previously. Robert reminded the group that we discussed the importance of effective communication in our families. He mentioned that good communication builds better relationships in the family, a family that communicates openly rarely has conflicts, it prevents divorce, rumors in the community among others. Lorna thanked the members for being a good class and introduced a subtopic Attack and Avoid. Lorna mentioned some of the examples of both of these communication styles and posed a question to the community of what style do they frequently use while communicating. The examples of attacking communicating styles are ; interrupting while speaking, nagging, fighting, always wants to be right , insulting while some characteristics of the avoiding communication style are ; avoiding situations, walking away, talking behind someone’s back, feeling low and depressed, sulking in silence among others. Lorna asked the where they fall and whether they use any of these styles to communicate and they said yes. They looked at advantages of avoiding behavior like; prevents further conflicts, gives time for one to rethink their actions and how to handle the issues at hand better, it also promotes friendships, promotes respect among others. Under attack they looked at disadvantages where they looked at ; creating enmity, fear, distrust, insecurity among others. Lorna urged that sometimes its better to avoid some conversations other than saying something that may worsen the situation. However sometimes avoiding a situation may not be a good thing as the other party may not take it well. Lorna encouraged the community members to study the situation and know where they can apply these two communication styles.
Lorna also talked about involving children in our communications. She continued and said that being a part of our children’s life is very critical towards their growth and development. Lorna asked the community members that who was responsible in the upbringing of our children. The men said the women but the chairman Bakolaki said both parents. Lorna agreed with the chairman as she said that both parents were responsible for the upbringing of their children. Lorna urged the parents to create time and conversations with their children as this will Make them feel cared for , loved and can improve their performance at school Lorna urged the parents to praise their children regularly and compliment them when they do good, get to know the challenges they are facing at home, school and with their peers. Lorna said the parents sometimes leave the communication part to the teachers and neglect their role as parents and added that no one knows their child than a parent. She added that talking to our children also instills morals in them and can also prevent early pregnancies.
Conclusion
The chairman Bakolaki and the secretary thanked Lorna for this very important lesson and the secretary even knelt to show her gratitude. He also pointed out a certain issue in the community concerning a child who is being mistreated by her step mother and the step father has tried talking to her and so have some of the community members but in vain. Lorna advised taking the issue to the probation officer as something needs to be done immediately.
