Notes
Tom made a visit to kagulu village to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements as well as facility construction and improvements especially in homes that still have latrines to finish and other facilities to improve like showers and dish racks. When he arrived in the village, he passed by the chairman’s home whom he moved with in homes. They started off with the home of a primary school headmaster who for a long time had an old latrine which was over due for a new one. When they reached they found when he had constructed on the new pit and promised that he would be putting a roof on it. Tom encouraged him to surely roof-it as it was the only way to secure the latrine so that it can serve his home for a longer period. After there they moved to the hospital area where they found a resident digging a new latrine. They pit was about 10 ft and Tom encouraged him to continue digging to about 20 ft because he was in a small plot of land. The purpose of that is to dig a deeper pit that can serve for long before needing to dig and construct a new latrine. In another section they also found a pit under digging and that residents was also encouraged on how to dig the pit as well as how to construct on it. In the home of a bar attendant, Tom found when he had brought in people to dig for him a new pit which was about 5ft. He was digging a circular pit but the ground was so rocky and hard. Tom got another pick axe for the people digging and they were very thankful. They promised to dig it and get it done at a depth of 35ft. Because the pit is close to the existing borehole, Tom advised them to only dig to a depth of 20ft so as to avoid contamination of the water. In other homes, there were also new dish racks and showers. Tom encouraged the committee members to continue encouraging the residents to improve on their sanitation and hygiene standards through improving there facilities and making new ones.
