Notes
Tom made a visit to to kagulu village to check on improvements in sanitation and hygiene as well as checking on homes that are still lacking latrines. When Tom arrived in the village he met the chairman and together they started moving around and after they were joined by two other committee members. They started off from the lower section towards the trading center. In the lower section they found two new latrines under construction as well as a new pit being dug. Tom also encouraged a lady about how to use ash in her latrine as well as encouraged her to smear and maintain the latrine structure. From the lower section they moved to the trading center where they met four new pits being dug and in one pit, Tom found when residents were digging. They were at a depth of 5ft and they were digging the circular pit. The owner of the pit also reported to Tom about a neighbor’s latrine that smells bad. He said he had tried to speak to the neighbor about his lateine but nothing was changing. Tom reached out to the neighbor and encouraged them both that one of the ways to solve the conflict of the bad smell from the latrine was to apply ash in the latrine. Both of them did not know that ash can help with the smell. Tom encouraged the neighbor to bring ash and when he poured it in the pit, both of them could not smell anything. They were both surprised and thanked Tom for the knowledge of using ash. They were both happy about it. Tom later moved to another section of the trading center where he found another very big pit being dug and another they had started constructing on it. Tom and the committee members together encouraged the residents to work and finish their latrines as well as improving on other facilities. Tom after left for jinja.
