Notes
Suzan and Jessica went to the village with the purpose of monitoring the use of the energy saving stoves and other facilities for the healthy and safe kitchen program such as the kitchen, bathrooms, latrines, rubbish pits and the dish racks. When they arrived at the village, they went straight to the chairperson’s home whom they had contacted before about their village visit that day. He happily welcomed Kibo staff together with other community members who then offered them a sit and discussed about the activities that would take place that day. Among the first activity was to move around the village, home to home while monitoring the facilities for the healthy and safe kitchen program mainly the fuel efficient stoves, then later meet with the community members and discuss about their challenges and possible solutions. Kibo staff together with some committee members for the stove program began moving around the village house to house while monitoring the facilities. Some of the stoves were not well built and smeared in that they started cracking while others were well maintained. Jessica and Suzan kept on correcting their mistakes where necessary requesting them demolish and build new ones with the help of some members who had mastered all the skills of building a good energy saving stove. Later that day after the monitoring process, the members gathered at the meeting place with the Kibo staff and discussed about different issues whereby the main issue was to improve on their sanitation and hygiene around their homes for a better healthy living and also to continue smearing their kitchen floors and walls as well as the fuel efficient stoves. This was very important because it minimized jiggers and also the facilities smeared lasted longer and looked neat. Kibo staff requested some community members who had mastered all the skills for building the stoves to continue teaching and assisting other new members who came in late in the healthy and safe kitchen lessons. They also encouraged them to maintain and keep the same spirit of working together for an effective and faster development within their village. The meeting finally came to an end after agreeing on the date and time that the next meeting would take place, also closing it with a prayer from a community member.
