Notes
Alex was in Ituba to meet with the community about the remaining steps that have to be fulfilled before a borehole is used by the community. There was a temporary water committee that was selected in the beginning aid the process of borehole drilling. The community had suggested that they select a committee that was to work temporary and later come up with a permanent committee. A committee that had been put in place in the beginning was the same that was confirmed to work permanent. This committee is led by a woman called Ewuleni Nakilanda as the chairperson. In total, a committee of 8 people was selected. A water user committee is very important because it’s the one that takes control and the lead of taking good care of the borehole. Alex had to tell the gathering that the fact that this borehole is seen as complete by most people in the village because it pumps out water, it’s not yet completed because the borehole has no fence yet, no soak pit, it needs a trained water committee. Alex also did guide the community members on how a standard borehole should look like and guided them on how to build this fence. A standard soak pit was also talked about and the size that needs to be dug. The community asked about why the water was not clearing well and Alex told them to be patient and keep pumping the borehole until it will clear. However, the borehole was very clear that day and there was no any color change observed. He told them to be vigilant and watch out for any color change this week. Alex would then inform the drilling company about and see if they need to come back and blow again. The community members together with the committee were left a task of making sure that they complete building a fence, soak pit and leveling of the borehole compound. Alex will have to go back and inspect the work done and continue preloading the community through the other steps remaining like training of the water user committee and the going through the community roles and responsibilities. A group of about 38 people attended the meeting and many missed to attend because there were some two people that passed away recently.
