Notes
Tom made a visit to kalitumba village to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements as well as maintenance but also to hold a village meeting to discuss about the way forward for the slab program especially for the homes that did not get the slabs. This is because some slabs cracked during the drying period. When he reached the village, he found a few people at the meeting place and mostly the committee members. When he asked why most people were not present, they said that the person who mobilized them for the meeting told them late so most people were running late. Tom suggested that instead of waiting for people while sitting, they should move around to see what improvements had taken place during the holiday period. They went to Anet’s home a single mother who before Christmas break, she still lacked a latrine. When they visited her home, they found she had constructed a latrine as well as a shower facility. Tom was so happy and thanked Anet for committing to changing her home to make it a better place for her children. Anet was abandoned by her husband and all efforts of getting her husband to help in the construction of sanitation facilities had failed. So it was so encouraging to see that Anet had stepped up to take the responsibility. The committee members were also thankful and appreciated Anet for the good work she had done and encouraged her to continue improving by digging the rubbish pit as well as constructing the dish rack. But as they moved around, they decided to take the meeting on the way as they moved checking on homes. One of the issues they discussed about was how to replace the broken slabs. Most of the committee members are a part of a savings group that is headed by one of the vhts. During there end of year sharing of the annual savings, they raised the issue of the slabs as the residents whose slabs broke are a part of the savings group. Members from the savings group decided to contribute a small amount of money to by Materials so that new slabs could be made. The members were still constructing and they were planning to buy the materials after the money was all collected. Tom was so thankful that the savings group members offered to help the rest of the members. During the moving around they found two new latrines recently constructed as well as one which they had just finished constructing the concrete floor. Tom also encouraged them on keeping there hand washing facilities clean and well constructed.
