- Introduction
Lorna went to this village to teach about HIV prevention and positive behaviors
Overview
Lorna arrived the village and went to the chairman’s place and together went to the meeting place. Unfortunately while waiting for the community members to gather it started raining but the host of the meeting place was kind enough to let us into their house. After everyone was inside the house, the meeting started. The chairman addressed the meeting and also informed Lorna that they started a saving scheme and this he credited Lorna because before closing last year Lorna challenged them to stop being lazy and do something for themselves and on their own. After this he welcomed Lorna to address them. Lorna started by telling them how thankful and excited that they took her advice seriously and put it into practice. Lorna advised them to be trustworthy and also asked them to find the purpose as to why they are saving . This will help them define the purpose of their saving scheme. She asked them whether they had a committee and they said they do in fact all of them were present. She also asked how much they were saving and they told her whatever anyone has. Lorna told them that’s a great start but what would be greater is fixing an amount that should be given by everyone. This gives everyone a sense of ownership and also aids in accountability purposes. She advised them to also start thinking of rules that govern their Scheme and urged them to consider good sanitation and hygiene among others. Lorna thanked them and moved on to the topic of the day.
Lorna started by reviewing the previous lesson a Disease Progression and positive behavior before looking at HIV prevention. Last year they stopped on Disease Progression but did not look at positive behavior. Disease progression refers to the different stages HIV progresses in the body. They looked at the window period, incubation and Honeymoon period. They also looked at positive behaviors like; avoiding alcohol, not smoking, avoiding stress, using a condom for any sexual encounter, eating a balanced diet, getting enough rest among others. After this they went straight to HIV prevention where they mentioned different ways of one preventing themselves from getting HIV.
They looked at not sharing sharp instruments, not having unprotected sex, not having many sexual partners, giving birth in hospitals, getting tested for HIV, being faithful to ones partner, abstaining from sex among others. Lorna picked on Condom use where she asked, what their general thoughts on using condoms were. They mentioned they don’t get the satisfaction as one who does not use one, they also mentioned that the women don’t like it, they mentioned it causes cancer, it hurst women. Lorna therefore asked to respond to these uncertainties. Lorna mentioned that it is true a condominium is not 100% effective but not in the way they were looking at it. She mentioned that a condom if used correctly saves one form STDs , pregnancy and HIV. She mentioned that the reasons why people complain why the condoms may not work is because of incorrect use. Lorna also made it clear that she has had no where about condoms causing cancer but when they do put it out there everyone will surely know. On the response of women not liking it, the women said that was a lie and that it was the men who don’t like it saying how does one eat a sweet with its wrap?. About satisfaction Lorna says that it’s not about satisfaction if your saving your life and that of your loved one. One man said that it was too greasy. Lorna said the lubricant helps avoid friction because without it one can get hurt. Lorna compared this to a door that needs greeting it will make noise until it is fixed by greasing it. This sent the group into laughter but they agreed it was true. Time was gone so they stopped the lesson to continue from there next time.
Conclusion
Lorna thanked them for coming and encouraged those in the savings group to think about writing a constitution for their group. They promised to do so and also asked Lorna for more guidance. Lorna told them that she will talk to Abraham of Mvule Community Development Program to make a visit with her and talk to the group.
