Notes
This meeting took place at the borehole site under the mango tree where all the people gathered to discuss ways of how to look after their new borehole. The old borehole that was drilled by the government broke down last week and now this leaves only one borehole that Kibo group drilled in the village serving many people in the village. About 120 homes now get water from this new well. This leaves this borehole very busy as many people come to get water from it. Also also noticed that the water cleared very well and there were no any complaints raised from the village members about the water changing color to look brown and dirty. This was the reason why this borehole was left for the community to pump in order for the water to clear. Alex did a training lesson of the new water user committee about their roles and responsibilities making sure that each committee member knows what to do. Alex told them that each of the members have to be very active at all times that is when the borehole will function as required. For example the water user committee needs to make sure that all the water users pay all the dues towards the borehole account, ensure the borehole fence is on at all times, the Jerrycans that fetch water needs to be clean. The same water committee has to make sure that sanitation and hygiene standards are maintained in all the village households. Alex also talked about the safe water chain, making sure that the clean water got from the borehole has to end up in a clean home and using clean water containers like pots and Jerrycans. This prevents almost 95% of diseases brought by poor sanitation and hygiene. It is important that all the people in the village be responsible enough making sure that they follow all the bylaws that will be enacted soon. The borehole bylaws were not done because many people didn’t come to the meeting and so it was pushed to the next meeting on 4/2/2019. Alex then visited two homes to check on them and see if they had made progress. On a good note, Edmond built a structure on his new pit and he is planning to roof it soon. Also Yafusa completed his new pit latrine and built a structure. Another meeting will be held next to come up with the bylaws that each water user can follow.
