Notes
Tom and two visitors from Pepperdine University made a visit to the village to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements in the village. When they reached the village, they found the committee members and the chairman waiting at the meeting place. They first had a brief meeting were they discussed about the progress of the village as well as the changes and improvements in sanitation. The committee members reported of three new latrines recently constructed in the trading center. Tom explained to the visitors what the committee members were discussing before they started moving around the village. They started off from one section of the trading center as they moved to the section of the primary school. In the trading center section they were able to see new dish racks as well as two new showers recently constructed. In other two homes they found two new latrines being constructed as one of they the floor was already constructed and remaining with the structure. Tom advised the resident on how to better construct the floor by mixing mud and them putting it on the floor instead of just dirt. In another home, they found a new pit being dug. The pit was not well dug and Tom advised the committee members to advise the resident on how to better dig the pit so it I’d more stronger when constructed on the structure. They moved and crossed from one side of the primary school to another section and in this section they found a newly constructed latrine while two pits were being dug. One pit was at a depth of 6ft while the other was at a depth of 20ft. Tom advised the resident to continue digging to reach the standard depth before constructing on it while for the other pit, Tom advised the resident to prioritize good and durable materials for the latrine as it was very deep and up to standard. In one home of Mrs Namudama, she used to run away and hide from kibo staff members but ever since she got a new latrine, she did not run away this time when she saw Tom. She thanked Tom for encouraging her to acquire a latrine in her home. Later they found another latrine that collapsed due to heavy rains. It was a very deep latrine but because it was not roofed, the rains weakened the floor and the latrine collapsed. Tom spoke about the value of roofing the latrines as it’s important. Tom after reaching the meeting place, he explained to the visitors about kibo work and why it was important to moving around the village checking on all the homes and the visitors were very happy. The visitors also appreciated greatly what kibo is doing in the village especially in the area of sanitation and hygiene
