Lorna went to teach about HIV transmission and mother to child transmission.
Over view
Lorna started by reviewing the previous lesson the relationship between HIV and STDs and women and HIV/AIDS.lorna asked the committee members what was taught previously. This she does to measure whether the community members understood what she taught. The community members were able to remember prompting Lorna to introduce the topic of the day. Lorna continued with the topic Women and HIV/AIDS where they looked at Mother to Child Transmission. Here they looked at the three different ways through which a mother can pass on HIV to their child. They looked at three ways; Through breastfeeding, during pregnancy and during child birth. Through breastfeeding, they were able to learn that HIV is present in breastmilk and therefore the mother should exclusively breastfeed for 6 months. Although however WHO is recommending that an HIV positive mother can now breastfeed for 1year. During pregnancy, we were able to learn that a mother can pass on HIV to her unborn child if for example she gets into a fight with her husband and is hurt at this time, when a mother does not take prenatal visits, carries heavy objects which can affect her pregnancy and may cause bleeding.Lorna encouraged the men to help their wives during this moment. Many women said that during this time it is important for husbands to help their wives with house chores. During delivery, the mothers blood or body fluids can get into contact with the baby hence transmitting the virus to the child. Lorna added that also being very disciplined with taking their medication from pregnancy to birth also reduces chances of passing the virus on their child.
They also looked at the different ways through which HIV is transmitted. Lorna asked for the community responses. They mentioned sharing of sharp instruments like razors, safety pins, needles among others. However the chairman asked Lorna about how long the virus takes to be on an object before it dies . Lorna replied it depends on the temperature but also it could take 25 minutes. They looked at having many sexual partners, not using a condom, alcoholism, giving birth in unsafe places. They also looked at other ways through which HIV is not transmitted. They looked at things like; HIV cannot be got through sharing cups, plates, buckets, bathrooms, washing clothes of an infected person, hugging , kissing unless blood is involved, being near a person with HIV, sharing clothes. As they were still going on, Alex asked if the youth would be allowed to leave the meeting because they had a savings group meeting. This therefore interrupted the meeting prompting the chairman to ask Lorna if they can continue with the lesson another day since members were moving up and about.Lorna agreed and they will be starting from here on the next visit. They will also be looking at proper condom use.
Conclusion
Alex asked to talk to Lorna about their Savings group if she would find time and give them advice concerning their savings group. He informed Lorna that right now they were just doing cash rounds where after a month one member receive some money.
Lorna said they would talk about this on her next visit.
