There is a great response of the people attending Kibo meetings and the remaining homes that had been still working to improve on their sanitation

The second borehole that was serving the community broke down and now many of the people are coming to get water from this new Kibo borehole, congesting it very much and over pumping it as well.

Ituba in general has been challenging to even get it to this point after the district met a lot of resistance when they were trying to work in this village and they gave up because the village couldn’t respond positively on what they were being told. After a long struggle, Kibo group has managed to get this village to a level that makes Ituba village different since this village was known to be the most challenging and dirty village in the whole Namutumba sub county with many people doing open defecation.

This visit was intended to guide the community on an important part of enacting the borehole bylaws for the new borehole drilled by Kibo group in Ituba Namalowe. Alex first told the community why it was very important to have these bylaws before the borehole can be used by the community. The community members were all happy that they were going to enact these laws to guide everyone on proper management of their borehole. Alex first inspected the new borehole fence that was constructed by the community and some of the borehole fence poles were not meeting the standards and need to be replaced. Also the community will have to build around the soak pit and then fill up the stones in the soak pit too. About 70 people and majority women attended the meeting and together with some men that came to the meeting they enacted 11 bylaws all together. Amongst which were, to open the borehole from 6:00am to 7:00pm locking it every day. To only allow clean Jerrycans to get water, all the people that come to the borehole should have respect for each other, No animals like cows to be brought to the borehole for water. Always keep the borehole clean by sweeping it every day. Paying a monthly contribution of 500/= on top of the 300,000/= start up account balance and many other bylaws that were agreed by everyone. These bylaws will be printed out and copies given out to the water user committee, the LC 1, the sub county office and the district water office. This discussion took along time because it involves everyone being on board with it before a bylaw is passed. The chairman of the village was present to guide the community as they were passing these bylaws. Kibo group was thanked very much for opening their eyes and guiding them on what to do to maintain their new borehole. All the people agreed that many of the boreholes breakdown including two of their old boreholes that are not working because they didn’t come up with such bylaws that everyone would follow to maintain their boreholes. One of the borehole that broke down two weeks ago is not working and the other second one broke down three years ago. This leaves only the Kibo borehole and one other shallow well at the school serving the community. However because of a very big population, the village come to this new Kibo borehole now is very congested and now over pumped putting it at a risk of breaking down soon. Alex will go back to conduct another training of the water user committee, update some homes about their hygiene and sanitation status into the final survey and discuss about borehole commissioning date.
