Notes
Tom, Alex, Enock and Fallon made a visit to kishaike village to carry out triggering in the village. When they arrived in the village, they found a few village residents already at the meeting place about 15 people. They moved around as they waited for more people to arrive. After about 30mins, there was a turn up of 40 people and the kibo staff members felt right to start the triggering session. The chairman of the village open the meeting by welcoming the kibo staff members as well as the village residents. Tom after was invited to start the triggering session and he led the residents through a session of village mapping, fecal matter cycle, diseases identification, shit village calculations. The village enjoyed all the sessions but more specifically the mapping session. The village residents were able to identify the diseases associated with open defecation as well as realizing that open defecation is a danger to there village and a danger to there lives. They were able also to identify how fecal matter moves and how they eat fecal matter in there village. After Tom’s session, Alex guided the community through identifying the difference between bad facilities and good facilities and why it’s important for residents to construct good facilities for there homes because it’s the only way through which sanitation and hygiene can be sustained. Some of the facilities included latrines, shower facilities, dish racks, rubbish pits etc. after Alex’s session Enock guided the community through how residents spend money on diseases as a result of Open defecation yet they would be saving money if they embraced good sanitation and hygiene practices. Residents were able to realize through there participation how much money they spend and time on treating there children and themselves. This led many people to realize that they can save money or some of them are poor because they are spending most of there money on treating family members and they also realized that the solution is to embrace good sanitation and hygiene practices. Further more Enock guided the community through some of the most emotionally sensitive issues in the community such as death of a child as a result of diseases that can be prevented through proper hygiene and sanitation practices. After Enock, the government officials who joined kibo staff in the triggering such as the DPC and other police officers also emphasized the value of sanitation and hygiene in the lives of people. The DPC also explained to the residents about the legal implications if someone did not embrace sanitation and hygiene. But he emphasized that the government and the police was also in there village to work together with them so that they see sanitation and hygiene improvements in kishaike village. After the village residents set a date when the program of sanitation will be completed and they gave each other 4months that each home will have the facilities needed to promote sanitation and hygiene standards in each persons home. Later volunteers were asked to come up who will voluntarily help in the promotion of sanitation and hygiene standards in the village and a group of about 15 people came up both men and women. After pictures were taken of the ground together with the government officials and kibo staff members. The government officials handed the pick axes and shovels to the committee in support towards the program from kibo group. The village was very happy and the all government and kibo staff left the village.
