Notes
Introduction Lorna went to this village to teach on HIV prevention and Disease Progression and positive behavior. Introduction Lorna reached the village and met with Paul who is on the borehole committee who informed her that unfortunately there was a meeting at the primary School and that most parents were required to go attend the meeting. Lorna asked why he did not inform her before reaching the school and he said that it was an abrupt meeting and that, the children had been sent home to return with their parents. Lorna said it was fine and that she would teach those who came. At about 2pm a few members gathered and Lorna decided to teach them. She taught on HIV prevention where she told members that they should be familiar with this but that Life Skills is to remind ourselves of how we can , take good care of ourselves without falling victim of diseases case point HIV/AIDS. Lorna therefore posed the question to them on how we can prevent ourselves from getting HIV/AIDS. They mentioned using a condom which is not something they love to use. The women said the men don’t love to use it but also the men said when they negotiate the use of condoms with their wives, their wives complain that they are sleeping around. Lorna encouraged to use a condom is for both parties to agree on why they are using it and how it will help protect themselves as a family. Lorna added that this goes hand in hand with being faithful she urged the members to remain faithful to their partners as another way of preventing HIV/ AIDS. Sam mentioned avoiding to share sharp instruments like needles, syringes, among others. Lorna asked whether reducing too much intake of alcohol can prevent one from getting HIV ?. They asked how?. She mentioned that sometimes alcohol clouds the mind that one may not think clearly and may be tempted to have sex with someone they don’t know or have had sexual desires towards them but have never told them and this was the chance they got. This person is most likely to contract HIV or even other STDs. They also looked at giving birth in the hospital and not at home, they looked at wearing gloves when attending to someone who is/ was bleeding. Lorna encouraged taking HIV tests as another preventive measure. Lorna also briefly introduced Disease Progression and positive behavior. She mentioned the three stages in the progression of HIV which are; Window period which she mentioned was the most dangerous stage since here the body has not developed enough anti bodies to turn up positive, 2. Incubation stage and 3. Honey moon stage. Lorna also mentioned that there were some behaviors that a person living with HIV needed to abandon in order to live positively and live longer. Lorna did not go further and told the members she will continue from here in in the next meeting when more community members are present. Conclusion Lorna thanked the members for coming despite the commitment they had and urged them to find out what was required of them at the primary School.
