Notes
Introduction Lorna went to continue with the topic HIV Awareness Skills Overview Lorna’s plan changed when she got to Kigalama A when on arrival she was told that they had a funeral which she was not informed earlier. Lorna decided to go to the home where the funeral was being held and paid her respects and condolences. Lorna was meant to teach Decision Making Skills - steps in making good decisions but this was not possible. However instead of returning, since she was in Kigalama already she called Tuli the chairman Kigalama B if it was possible to mobilize some people so she comes and teaches them. The chairman said it was okay. Since it was short notice , the community members came late and when they had gathered the lessons began. Lorna took the community through a review of the previous lesson and some of them remembered while others did not. Lorna encouraged them not to forget what is taught to them but put it in practice and also tell those who did not come. They reviewed disease progression and then discussed positive behaviors. Lorna asked the community what those co-factors are that can make a person more vulnerable to getting AIDs and dying faster. Lorna asked should the PLWHIV(Person living with HIV) drink alcohol?. Some said no while others said yes give them. Sharon who is about 20 years or below said if the person was a heavy drinker , one should not stop completely but they can be given 1 bottle once in a while or maybe twice in a month. Lorna appreciated Sharon’s answer and asked the community members to clap for her. Lorna asked how about cigarettes? They all responded NO to this one. Yafesi said they need to reduce their workload, not do heavy work, carry heavy things. Not getting enough rest, not eating well , being stressed, not getting. After this they looked at Cure or Treatment of HIV. Lorna asked whether HIV/AIDS has a cure and everyone agreed there was no cure but there is treatment. Lorna mentioned there several treatments available other than the ARVs which are the common drugs used here like; family support, psychosocial support, guidance and counseling, good nutrition, exercise , Avoid STDs and reinfection among others. Conclusion Lorna found out they registered their Savings Scheme which was a huge step forward.Lorna encouraged them to continue with the spirit and develop themselves. She also encouraged the members to work on their sanitation facilities as some of the are lacking and they promised to do it.
