Notes
Enock and Martin went to Kishaike, to check on facility constructions like latrines, dish racks and shower areas. They walked around the village with the Chairman LC1 and the sanitation committee members. Good enough the community members are working so hard on latrine constructions, dish racks, rubbish pits, shower areas and others are busy digging new pit latrines. Martin went in the upper season and the village leaders were encouraging the residents about the standards, maintenance and smearing their home facilities like houses, latrines and shower areas. The village leaders and the community members are so happy to have Kibo’s program in their village. They told the group that, since kibo started working there, they are seen the values of the home facilities. Enock continued assessing, evaluating, monitoring and guiding the residents how to dig proper latrine pits, encourage good showering facilities and educating the residents about the importance of having a good standard showering area. We talked about privacy and dignity as sign of their respect in the community. He encouraged them to construct with bricks and use of cement on top of the showers to increase durability and sustainability. This will save them a lot of time and resources not doing the same things over and again. There is an old lady who has started digging a new latrine in his home. This lady for a very longtime she used to practice open defecation with their kid defecating in the near by gardens. It was really cool to see her paying off money to some men to come and dig for them a pit latrine. She has already completed digging her new rubbish pit and now roofing the kitchen areas. This came up as the result of triggering in open defecation and demonstration how fingers, flies, fences and food is contaminated and causes diseases like diarrhea cholera, typhoid, dysentery and even loss of lives due to lack of blood and dehydration. There are many new dish racks which are under construction, all the pick axes are busy digging pit latrines. Generally all the homes are super busy working on different facilities although most people go to the gardens in the morning but during the evening they spare time working to improve on the sanitation levels.
