Notes
Tom made a visit to igerera village to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements as well as checking how the residents are progressing with the roofing of there latrines as well as the construction of hand washing facilities. When he arrived in the village, he went straight to the chairman’s place whom he found. Before moving around, they discussed briefly about the improvements in the village as regards sanitation and hygiene. The chairman said that many residents are improving and many are actively participating in the program. He said some residents had come to his home so that they can learn from his new hand washing stand how to construct there as well and he has been demonstrating to them how to do it. He said on the issue of roofing, most residents are collecting poles and some saving for nails before they can roof there latrines. After a brief discussion, they started moving around but they started from the chairman’s home. He had recently constructed his hand washing stand with a jerican on it as well as helped his neighbor construct his. He said he was happy to have his done because now many residents are coming to see his to learn from it. He said he loved his new hand washing stand as it was easier to maintain and manage. His neighbor had also constructed a new hand washing stand that day and had already put on a jerican. He had also improved on the height of the wall of the latrine and said he was roofing it soon. On the lower section, they visited a home of an elderly lady who the chairman had helped to construct the hand washing stand after the cane to him and requested for help. She said she was happy for her new hand washing stand and that she was saving money for a jerican. On the upper section they found also two new latrine being constructed on. One is for an elderly man and the other is for his neighbor who is working on a new one before the old one gets full. Tom thanked both for taking action towards improving there sanitation and hygiene and encouraged them to construct the facilities to a good standard. There was also a home of a young couple who Tom and the committee found constructing a kitchen for their home. They said because of the encouragement and lessons from kibo about sanitation and hygiene, they have decided to improve on there home as well. Tom appreciated the young man and lady for their efforts to improve there home. In another home of a disabled man, they found when he had finished roofing his latrine with the iron sheet. The roofing was not to a good standard so Tom encouraged the man on some methods and better ways to roof the latrine. The man was very thankful and appreciative and after that man’s home, Tom left for jinja. There is great improvements generally in terms of sanitation and hygiene improvements and facility constructions.
