The kibo Wash team comprised of Tom, Enock and David teamed and went to this community to conduct a triggering session in open defection. They were also joined by the government officials and police officer from Namutumba. As they arrived in the community, they involved in the mobilization of the residents to come at the meeting place, looked for some open defection areas and homes to get the fecal matter which will be a spacemen during the triggering session. When they got everything they needed, they went back to the meeting point to start the triggering session. We start there for a while waiting for all the community members as the drama group was busy entertaining the community members and mobilizing those who haven’t come for the lessons to hurry up. When it was 3pm we had a good number of residents to start, The Chairman stood up to open up the meeting, welcomed all the leaders and his residents, asked someone to pray then he introduced the kibo Wash team to take over. Enock stood up, introduced everyone, told the residents why they had called them and started the triggering session. Asked volunteers to come as draw the map of the village, 6 men stood up and started working on it. When the map was done, we invited everyone in the community to participate in allocating their homes on the map which was good to see. Everyone was so cooperative in that. After the Wash team Asked series of question concerning the qualities of a good latrine, what do they consider or call a latrine, who qualifies to have that kind of a latrine case in point has 15ft or more, good strong walls and tall enough, A roof, door, cover and more. There was non of the residents with a good latrine. So the map showed no latrine, we taught the about diseases which affect them when they practice open defection and also bring even the loss of lives. All the people saw how flies move from one place to another as we used the fecal matter cycles and showed them all the agents which move germs and fecal matter. Community members saw flies on food, flies on feces, all the animals among other factors. We ran through all the lessons, did the fecal matter calculation where all the people asked questions and saw how many time and weight they defecate in a day, a week a month and a year while practicing open defecation which leads to poor academic performance, poor health, poor sanitation, lost of problems, medication expenditure and expenses, loss of lives and beloved ones which is so emotional. After that, the Kibo facilitator introduced medical expenses which involved participation of community members answering questions about where they take their children when they are sick, which medication and how much it costs. They saw how much they use and spend on medication, this really open their minds to start thinking about transforming their homes and villages for the best to of their community. Ironically, everyone in the community greatly saw how they have been causing a big problems to their lives. After we used the flip board, which had picture of good standard latrine, shower areas, dish racks, rubbish pits, and how important to construct good sustainable facilities. We encouraged them on the core values of sanitation and why it’s so important for everyone in the community to embraced the lessons and willing to work hard to change their old behaviors of open defecation and construct good facilities say latrines and use them. They committed them self to 3 months to completed the program and have all the facilities in their homes.. Kibo group contributed pick Axes ? and shovels to kick start the program since people claim to always lacking things to use while digging latrines.
