- Notes
- When Alex B arrived at Bupaluka, he found the members waiting for him at the usual meeting place. They had prayer together that was led by Saul.
The chairperson of the group Mutooto Saul said that they have not yet cleared their garden due to drought. He said that since Wabwose confirmed the land to the group and the group went and looked at it is and the members decided to plant cassava and soybeans. They said that as soon as it begins raining, they will plough the land because the land will be soft and easy to penetrate . One member said that some times when plant cassava they end up getting poor yield.
Alex triggered their mind and asked them to identify the possible causes of poor yield and these were the findings:
In most cases when community grow cassava, they plant close and sometimes end up get poor yield.
At times they plant cassava stems which are affected by pests and they end up dyeing leading to poor yields.
The are eager to have a project where there can work together as they share ideas while laboring.
Alex B told them as there need to spare their cassava to avoid competition for nutrients, need to look for quality stems that are not affected by pests for planting. He also told them the need to inter crop other that growing cassava alone and it grows they have nothing to eat but if they planted other crops like beans between the cassava space , they can be able to harvest the beans as they wait for the cassava to grow.
He also told them that their group garden is going to a demonstration project where he will demonstrate to them how to space their cassava. He urged the members to pick the knowledge and implement it in their individual gardens in order to improve on their harvest and to avoid famine.
Alex B addled that since it almost one acre, they can plant cassava and soybeans on the same plot.
This is because Cassava take almost a year while soybeans 3-4 months. The members will learn how one peace of land can be used for more than one crop and get a better yield. The measurements of the crops as they are planted differ since other crops grow tall and wide while others are short and do not spread out.
The members agreed asked Alex B to visits them, have the meeting on the land discuss from there how they will plant cassava and soybeans. Alex will also demonstrate to them how to space their crops. They also promised to mobilize all the members to be present and learn how they can benefit out of the intercropping.
