Notes
Enock and Martin visited this village to continue checking on the progress of latrine construction, dish racks, shower areas, kitchen areas, rubbish pits and all the usages. They focused on walking home to to home teaching, monitoring, assessing, evaluating, emphasizing the importance of good sanitation in home and all its benefits. During this time, they sensitized the residents to construct good standard structures by demonstrating to them how it’s so important to make a good foundation before constructing the walls of a latrine. They also encouraged the men to be more active in improving their homes as they reminded them about the many expenses they face due to open defecation, diseases which result due to poor sanitation in homes say diarrhea, cholera, typhoid, dysentery, bilharzia and many more which kill ebb their beloved one due to ignorance and no idea about the values of sanitation. This has also lead to increased poverty in homes due to continuous expenditure in medical for their children, wives and even the men yet they are the bread winners in most cases. This also leads to low productivity of agriculture since they spent more time in hospitals or clinics taking care of their children. The men where so happy to hear all this and also willing to change from the old ways to use of latrines and proper disposal of fecal matter. During the discussion some men appreciated the work we are doing of teaching them to learn the exact things affecting their families. After we spoke about the standardization of the latrine, shower areas, taught some people who had latrines the use of Ash in latrine to chase the flies from latrines and reduce the bad smell. Many people who didn’t know the values of a shower area where taught why it’s so important to construct a good tall shower area which will protect their dignity not exposing their selves to everyone in the community by not having shower areas. The ladies vowed to smear all the facilities, clean their compounds every day. Generally this village is responding well with the program.
