Notes
Tom made a visit to mpumiro village to meet with community members and committee members to demonstrate to them how to construct the new model dish rack. When he arrived in the village, he found out that there was a government program of spraying mosquitoes in the village. Every village leader was involved with this activity and therefore the meeting was canceled for Friday. After discussing the new arrangements with one of the committee members, Tom asked the rest of the committee members who were not a part of the spraying to move around with him in the village to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements. The committee members accepted and they started off from the section on the village on the upper side. They moved in all homes along the road going to bunaibani village. They found one pit being dug in that section and they encouraged the resident about construction methods and designs. The resident said he will construct the latrine to a better standard as set in the meeting during triggering. From that side they came to another section bordering Buyoboya village. In this section is where they found more pits. In one home they found when the men were digging the pit and it was about 18ft deep. The resident said he wants a 25ft pit for his latrine. Tom thanked him for the commitment he has showed and encouraged him to construct it well. In another in one home, the resident had already finished digging the pit and had started on the building of the structure while his neighbor had just finished the construction of the mud floor. Tom thanked both residents for the work they have put it and encouraged them to construct there latrines to a better standard. During that time, there was a group of young children who were following Tom and suggested that Tom visited one home they said was badly off. Tom honored there request and asked the committee members to take him there. Even though Tom did not go to the home directly, he was able to observe the sanitation and hygiene standards of the home the children suggested and surely the standards were very low. Because of time, Tom suggested to the committee members that they first make a visit to the home and share with the residents in that home about the need to improve on there sanitation levels. The committee members agreed to do so before the next time Tom visits the village. Most of the homes were working on latrines even though about three homes have new shower facilities. After Tom left for jinja.
