Lorna was able to teach on the consequences of early pregnancy to 3 different groups; the baby, Family of the teenage parents and the community at large.
Overview
Lorna arrived a few minutes late and immediately went to the headmasters office to sign in before heading to the Life Skills class. On the way Lorna called the headmaster and informed him since she was running late, that the pupils should copy notes from the Manila cards they wrote previously. Last week they were able to brainstorm causes of early pregnancy, Consequences to both the girl and boy child but they had not written in their books. Lorna entered class and found them copying notes which was encouraging meaning that the message was received well. Lorna gave them 10 minutes to finish up with the notes before teaching the lesson of the day. After they finished Lorna did a review of the previous topic and they pupils participated well. Lorna then introduced the topic for the day which was consequences of early pregnancy to the baby, family and community at large.
On the consequences of early pregnancy to the family they discussed the following ;
Imprisonment of the parents of the boy child, poverty, shame, loss of respect within the family, leads to family neglect and parental neglect.
On the consequences to the community they looked at; cheap labor, high crime rates due to school dropouts, underdevelopment, lack of respect for that community, increased number of teenage parents, poverty among others.
On the consequences to the baby we looked at; premature birth, Malnutrition, lack of basic needs, lack of parental love, parental neglect, low birth weight, possible death if not taken care of well, mental disabilities due to poor feeding of the mother among others. Lorna told the pupils that whatever they were learning all of them were victims but this was to prevent any of that to happen because now they have the knowledge on causes and consequences of early pregnancy such that they may not fall victim but also to teach those who have not been a part of this class.
Conclusion
Lorna told the pupils this lesson was for their benefit and that she would feel very sad if after learning all of this any of the life skills pupils fell victim to early pregnancy. She therefore encouraged them to take these lessons seriously and carry it with them.
