Notes
Introduction Lorna was here to teach about Goal setting. It is very important for one to have a goal in their life as this can make them work harder towards achieving that goal. They looked at both short and long term goals. Overview Lorna waited a while before the community members turned up and when they did, the meeting was opened with a word of prayer and then commenced. It’s been a while since Lorna was in this section of Kigalama . Lorna started by telling the community how this lesson was going to be more practical than theory and she asked for everyone’s involvement. Lorna started by asking the community what a goal was and they were able to respond that a goal is something you look forward to achieving. Lorna asked how many people had goals ? Or is it that they take each day as comes and one day they Weill get there?. Lorna told them not to answer that and that they will answer later at the end of the lesson. Lorna then mentioned that there were two types of goals ; short term and long term goals. She mentioned that short term goals are those that you can achieve within a short period of time like 1-3- 6 months where as, long term goals are those one can achieve over a year period and beyond. For example short term can be planting maize, beans for sell or home consumption, brick laying and long term can be building a house, opening up a business, among others. Lorna then then came back to the question on whether it was important to make goals and the community said yes. This was what they said; it’s important because it helps one to work harder, it enables one to look up to something, it gives you guidance on where one is going with their life that is direction, once one achieves one goal , it enables them to set even a more challenging goal. The practical bit is when Lorna asked members to mention both their short and long term goals. Lorna gave them time to think. After a few minutes, Patrick in his early 20’s looking very lost in thought was the first to answer. He shared both his short and long time goal was to rear chicken and from rearing chicken he would buy a goat and from a goat he would buy a cow look after it until it gives birth then he would sell one and use the money to go to University. After university he will buy a car. This was great to hear and this showed Lorna that Patrick understood exactly what was being taught. Lorna asked for another volunteer. Emma said that he would share his long term goal only which was to join a tertiary institution and when Lorna asked how he was to achieve this, he said that he was going to start by brick laying and sell these bricks until he gets enough money to go back to school. Lorna was encouraged by these two youth and asked to set a time frame to these . Patrick says he needs 6 months while Emma said 1 year and 4 months. Lorna added that everyone who came to the meeting should keep these young youth accountable. She asked that the community members remind these people when they set off tract to remind them what their goal was/is. Challenges It rained so heavily and most people ran back to their homes to take shelter. Conclusion Lorna thanked the members for coming and they urged Lorna not to take long to go back to their village. Lorna said that is not her intention and this is because there are many other villages that Life Skills is involved in as well.
