Notes
Alex first went to inspect the new borehole slab to find out if it had been looked after very well as the community had been instructed to do during the first week of borehole drying. He found when the dry banana leaves had been removed. On a very good note, the borehole slab was drying very well apart from a minor crack that was seen but it can easily be fixed. They then went to the meeting place where the village decided to make some changes in the water committee. They made these changes because the village agreed to appoint the people that live near the well. Some of the people were living very far from the borehole and so the village people thought it wise to have people who will keep a keen eye on the borehole since they stay around the well. The village people mentioned that they have received such a precious gift from Kibo that all the surrounding villages keep asking how Kagulu managed to get it and so they have to do all what it takes to make sure this gift is taken good care of and a strong water user committee will help to aid in this struggle. A committee of eight people headed by Steven Kighanda and Mutesi Edisa was elected by the community members. This water user committee is comprised of 4 men and 4 women. Alex then reminded the committee of their roles and responsibilities and this would be discussed in details since there were some new people on the committee. Training of this new water committee shall continue to make sure they know what to do and the job ahead of them. Alex also guided the village on how a safe water chain is maintained, making sure that clean water got from the well is kept clean when it reaches a clean home and using a clean container. Also Alex showed the village the size of poles required to build a strong borehole fence and demonstrated to the community how the fence is to be built with its dimensions of the soak pit. The borehole compound will to be worked on also . Alex will go back to continue with the discussion about borehole ownership and responsibility and guiding the community as they come up with the borehole bylaws.
