- Introduction
Lorna went to this village to introduce Life Skills to the village in general.
Overview
This was Lorna’s second visit in this in this villages as the first she made, was only to meet the leaders and make them aware of Kibo’s other intentions of working in this village. Therefore this was Lorna’s second visit here to officially introduce Life Skills Education and Counseling program to the community. The meeting started about 1:30pm with the secretary having an Agenda for the day which had a word of prayer as item one, the chairman’s speech, Kibo visitors , reactions from the community and lastly closing remarks and departure. The meeting was opened with a word of prayer after which the chairman made his opening remarks and told the meeting that Kibo is not a new word in the community and that for all Kibo’s programs in this village they are grateful and as a village they are very open to new programs because they know how Kibo has changed their lives. After these words, he asked Lorna to take the floor.
Lorna greeted the community members and thanked them for working in partnership with Kibo to make their lives better. She introduced herself as coming from Kibo and told them of Kibo’s intentions in this village with the new program Life Skills Education and Counseling program. Lorna gave a brief background of where this program started from and what birthed it. She added and said that they are very much involved in teaching the pupils at Bukhana P/S and they will be doing this for 9months of which 3 have been used in the first term. Lorna introduced the topics as;
1. HIV /AIDS Awareness Skills,
2.Communication skills ;
2Relationship Skills and
3Decision making Skills.
4.Critical thinking Skills. Lorna addressed all these topics and what subtopics each of the topics/ lessons entail. She mentioned that on the topic for HIV for example we all know about it but Life Skills teaches about it to continue reminding us and making us aware that this sickness is still very much at large and we need to have skills and knowledge on how to address this sickness.
After all this Lorna asked the members for their reactions and what they think about this program. The community was very welcoming and very excited about the program. Margret a VHT thanked Lorna so much for this program saying she was trained on some of these diseases but teaching the community members has been a challenge so she was very happy for this opportunity. George said all the topics mentioned indeed are those that directly affect them and they can’t wait to start. The chairman Ngobi John also welcomed this program very much and he said they will surely benefit from it.
Lorna thanked them and asked if they had any questions but they said no but they would have when they begin the lessons.
Challenges
They requested for a borehole from Kibo as their population is growing each day.
Conclusion
Lorna thanked them for coming and told them when next she will be returning to the village.
