Health lesson 7: AIDS/HIV

Ida and Irene went to Nabikenge to continue with disease recognition dealing with a continuation of food and waterborne diseases. Ida started with a review of the previous lesson but this time asked the members to share with the whole group what they are grateful for. Margaret said she is great full for the great work Kibo has done in her village,the changes it has brought in people’s lives to see that they can come up to express themselves and talk without shame or fear of what others will say and helping them know that they can do something to generate income and be able to provide for their homes. Nairuba said she is great full to God that she was diagnosed with breast cancer 6 years back but she has been able to live up to now and other members continued with what they are grateful for. Ida then thanked them for sharing and requested each one of them to keep praying for the other in their daily prayers. Then welcomed Irene to continue with the lesson. There after Irene asked the members what they feel should be the next lesson the next time they meet and since one of the members had cancer they suggested we should talk about cancer next time we meet and also requested that we repeat briefly about HIV/ AIDS since some of them missed out on the lesson. Irene suggested that they first finish with the food and waterborne diseases then if time allowed they would re-do that. Irene started with asking questions on how one can prevent food and water from becoming contaminated. Isabirye said by boiling drinking water, and washing hands before eating, Justine said by covering food to avoid flies from falling in it,and many more answers then Irene also told the members the signs of food poisoning or how one can tell that they have had contaminated food or water and asked the members to refer all individuals with the signs mentioned to the hospital immediately to avoid dehydration and other serious problems. Mafabi asked what causes food poisoning? He thinks it’s people with bad motives who put poison in people’s food. Irene bounced the question back to the community. Kapere said that people poison their friends and put the blame on food. Ida said that eating different types of food sometimes causes food poisoning, so if that happens, let’s always go to health units for proper medications. Irene then continued to talk about HIV/AIDS as requested starting with how it’s spread, prevention, how to stay positive, side effects of drugs and how to counsel their children and youths about HIV/AIDS.
