Notes
Enock and Martin made a visit to this community to walk home to home checking on latrine construction and other facilities. The Wash team triggered a week back in open defecation. During the visit, we met the local leaders from the government and VHTs then we teamed up to walk home to home teaching, sensitizing, encouraging, guide the residents how to dig good latrines and make strong foundation on the latrine pits dug before construction of the structures. As we walked around we visited homes which are constructing new facilities, new latrine pits, improving on shower areas, smearing of the facilities, construction of dish racks and more. The pick axes and shovels are so busy working. Apparently there are 4 new latrines already constructed, 3 new pits where seen about 7 ft deep and they are planing to dig up to 20ft deep. In this community many people have responded positively to the program and willing to change from their old behaviors of open defecation to new behaviors of using latrines and improve on their sanitations. I was so impressed to see an old lady smearing her latrine and encouraging the grand sons to dig their new rubbish pit. We spoke about the many diseases which are brought due to open defecation remaining them on the dangers and talked about the money expenditure brought by theses diseases. We put more emphasis on the importance and values of good sanitation and hygiene. After walking around, we had a short meeting with leaders encouraged them and reminded them of their roles and responsibilities as leaders. We challenged themes always walk around their village to monitor and guide their fellow residents.
