Notes
Tom, Avalon and students went to Mpumiro village to conduct triggering in hand washing as well as demonstration of the new dish rack model that kibo is promoting. When they arrived in the village, they found some of the committee members and some village residents waiting at the chairman’s place. They joined them as they waited for some of more residents to arrive. After a while, more residents arrived and they all decided that they start with the dish rack demonstration before going into the triggering in hand washing. The residents brought posts and sticks which they cut and built the dish rack under the guidance of Tom. While they were constructing the dish rack, Tom was interacting and asking them of what they thought about the dish rack. One resident said it was easy to construct and that it was cheaper as it used fewer nails. One resident calculated that they had saved 76 nails by using the new model. They promised that they were going to embrace the new model and promote it in the village. After the dish rack construction they moved to the next session which was triggering in hand washing. The session started off with the chairman introducing and welcoming every body to the meeting. Tom was after welcomed and he started off with asking by show of hands those who felt they had clean hands. A few people came in the front and Tom used an egg to demonstrate that there hands were dirty when they pulled the eggs and the eggs appeared dirty which showed that there hands were dirty. The two volunteers moved around the group showing every body the dirty eggs. They realized that even though your hands appear clean, they are dirty so always washing with soap or with ash is the best thing. Tom also took the group through other sessions of washing with soap compared to washing with bare water which the later shows the dirt removed from the hands. Also Tom demonstrated using ash to wash there hands when there there is no soap. Later they demonstrated and constructed the new hand washing stand out of bricks. The resident participated well and after constructing the stand, they felt it was better and easier to manage compared to the tippy taps. The residents committed that they will work on having the dish racks as well as the hand washing stands to improve on there sanitation and hygiene. After Tom and the group left for jinja.
