- Notes
- Harriet and Tape made a surprise visit to Budumba and this was intended to assess the level of sustainability of the Healthy and Safe kitchen program.
She found most people in their gardens because they did not expect them to visit their village. They were welcomed by Aisha Otimu who lead them to the homes where the stoves were built.
Most homes were very well swept and the stoves were being used on daily basis. This was evidenced by the absence of three stones fire in the kitchens, some people were a way from their homes but food was cooking by itself, or being attended by children.
Their kitchens were well smeared , some decorated with words appreciating kibo for empowering them with a skill. The members told kibo staff that the stoves helped them to save time since they are able to cook two things at ago ( sauce and food) unlike the traditional three stones fire where by some ones cooks sauce first and them food which takes a lot of time. They added that this has improved on their marriage relationships since the men no longer complain of delayed meals.
The members also said that the stoves that kibo taught them to build uses less fire wood that is two -three pieces of firewood and this has availed them with time to do other activities activities other than spending long hours in the forests looking for firewood.
They also said that they have now started the loan and saving scheme “ Bakuseka Magya” meaning that those who laughed at us at the beginning they will admire us at the end. This scheme has 30 members reported by Joan the vice chairperson of the scheme. She added that this has promoted unity and hardworking among the group members.
Harriet encouraged them to maintain that spirit and continue being creative or thinking of new ideas in order to achieve development.
