Healthy and Safe Kitchens
Notes
Harriet made a surprise visit to Sinde community and this was intended to assess the level of sustainability of healthy and Safe kitchen program as well as smearing of the home facilities. Also it would help Harriet find out whether participants use their stoves on daily basis or only cook on them when they realize that kibo is coming to their village. She started with the home of Matilda who is a committee leader and found her cooking on her stove, her home facilities were well smeared and she told her that the stove helped her to always cook food on time, using less firewood. She asked her to walk with her to the homes of other participants and they walked through over 25 homes and found out that they all cooked on their stoves on daily basis and this was evidenced by the absence of three stone fire in the kitchens. She also found food cooking by itself , attended by children when the parents were busy in their gardens. The chairperson of the group Samson wekesa told Harriet the number of the members in the group has now increased to 59 members because even those ones who never had kitchens have built them and the group built for them stoves. He added that their plan is to ensure that all the members in the group meets all the standards, get stoves and then start building stoves in the neighboring communities. He added that many people have approached them to build for them stoves but their are just waiting for all the members to get finished before they start helping others. Harriet encouraged them to maintain their stoves , team work and to start thinking of what else they can do as a group on top getting stoves and learning how to build stoves. She encouraged them to put their knowledge into practice for financial benefits.
