Health lesson 9: Disease Recognition
Notes
Irene and Ida went to kitukiro to continue with disease recognition basically teaching gastrointestinal worms. This was intended to encourage the community take deworming as a routine and not to wait for the Government to put mass deworming days. Ida started with a review of the previous lesson that Irene had taught then asked the community members if any of them had gone or taken a deworming tablet in the last six months and none raised their hands. Waiswa said it’s only children who have worms, adults don’t have worms because they don’t eat dirty things. Ida then invited Irene to clarify on what waiswa had said and to talk about worms in general.irene told the community members that worms are not only in children but also in adults because they can be got from so many things that we eat. There fore Irene talked about the gastrointestinal worms as a state where the parasites infect the intestinal tract of an individual or other animals and these can be found in any part of the body but common in the gastrointestinal tract. Irene went ahead to ask members on the different types of worms and the members answered with shapes, colors, size that they have ever seen then Irene clarified basing on the examples members had given. Irene then asked the members some of the symptoms or what one feels when they have worms.Namukose gave one that is most common that is Anal itching especially at night,Isabirye gave distended abdomen especially in children. And so many examples as the group excitedly and interactively participated. Irene then asked the members to ask questions and here members got to learn that worms can be vomited, affect the eyes, enter our bodies through bare foot and also lead to a Anaemia especially hook worms, cause foul smelling breath and gas. Irene informed the members that next time they meet they will talk about prevention and treatment of worms but also encouraged the members to look out on the symptoms discussed.
