Notes
Suzan and Tape went to the village to introduce the Healthy and Safe kitchen program to the community. When they arrived there, they found the members already gathered at the meeting place with a few of their leaders. The members happily welcomed Kibo staff and the chairperson L.C.1 from Kagulu lower opened the meeting with a prayer. He then requested each member to kindly introduce themselves one by one saying their names and the exact place they were living with their families. There after, the chairman invited Kibo staff to carry on with their lessons. Suzan stood up and welcomed all the members to the meeting that day and then introduced herself together with Tape as members of Kibo group. They went ahead introducing the Healthy and Safe kitchens program to the community, talking about it’s main goals and objectives and how it would benefit them. One of the main objectives they talked about was to improve on the their kitchen environment such as empowering them with the skills of building the energy saving stoves. Kibo staffs requested the members to identify or mention out different challenges they faced while they used the old three stones open flames for cooking, this helped them realize the need to accept change in the way they cooked while using the three stones. Kibo staff talked about the challenges that would reduce once they accepted the program, saying the new stove consumed less firewood, reduced accidents, saved time for other lessons, cooked food faster and United families. They also taught about the gender roles where by the community participated in identifying the roles of a woman and man in the family. This made each person to respect one another in the family despite of living all the work to one person. Suzan and Tape also talked about the requirements needed for each home before receiving a stove, such as a strong kitchen with a good roof, a shower area, latrine, rubbish pits, dish racks and tippy taps. All these facilities were important because they aided the program to be carried out effectively and also everyone who participated in the program activities could easily have access to them. The community happily welcomed the program and promised to participate in each lesson for it would improve on their healthy lives. The meeting finally came to an end with a prayer from one of the community leaders and after they all agreed on the date and time that the next meeting would take place.
