While in the village, Tom was joined by the chairman of the village and three sanitation and hygiene committee members and together they moved around and visited the lower section of the village. They started off by visiting a home of an elderly man who has started on digging a pit for his latrine. He said he was happy for the tools that kibo helped them with especially the pick axe and the shovel.
His pit was at a depth of about 8ft. Tom and the committee members encouraged him to continue digging and reach a depth of 15ft or more for his family. They also encouraged him about using good logs for construction. They also visited three homes where pits were being dug. In one home they were very encouraged with the residents when he dug a new pit in one week after the committee members discouraged him from constructing on the pit he had dug earlier which was not dug the right way.
The new pit was about 25ft. Tom encouraged the resident to use good materials as well as construct the latrine using good methods.
In other homes, Tom and the committee members encouraged residents to dig deeper pits as well as guided them on the dimensions of pits as other residents were digging wider pits that are hard to construct on.
Tom also reminded the chairman of the iron sheets so that the chairman can start encouraging residents about the money. Tom also encouraged residents on dish racks as well as showers areas.
The encouraged them to use cement to construct the shower facility if they want them to last longer.
