Notes
Introduction Lorna went to Kigalama to followup on the progress of Life Skills in this School. Overview Lorna arrived the School and was welcomed by teacher Salama the Schools staff Life Skills teacher. They went together to the staff room to talk about Life Skills. Things like how far has she gone, what challenges is she facing teaching Life skills and how can Kibo be of help. She said everything is going on well although the challenge is now she remained the only Life Skills teacher as Teacher Kirya was transferred to a different school and so she is having some difficulty balancing how to teach. Lorna advised her that she does not have to teach routinely like how it was before when Lorna and Manuela were teaching here but she can do it twice or thrice in a month to reduce on her workload. Lorna also said she would talk to the Headteacher about how he can assign another teacher to help Salama. However she said the lessons are going well and she is currently teaching Decision Making Skills. Lorna asked if she could speak to the Life Skills pupils and if there was anything in particular that she wanted Lorna to communicate to the pupils. She asked Lorna to teach on Causes of Early pregnancy. Salama went ahead and requested the teachers who were taking on primary six and seven to give Lorna 30 minutes to address the pupils. When Lorna entered the class the pupils from the previous Life Skills class now in Primary Seven were excited to see her and so was she. She greeted them and went back to reviewing what Life Skills is and what it encompasses. After doing the review she had a talk with them on Early Pregnancy and the causes. The pupils were very alert during this time. Lorna engaged the pupils through the entire time and it was a fun session. Lorna however encouraged the pupils that no one should lure them into having sex for any reason. She reminded them that their bodies are the Lords temple and should therefore not defile it because this will not make God very happy. She told them to also be very open with their parents Incase someone is making them uncomfortable touching their private parts and telling them not to say anything about it because it is wrong and it is punishable by law.She told them that each and everyone of them is beautiful and handsome and they should know that and believe in themselves because if they don’t see themselves as beautiful , someone else may take advantage of this and can easily get them pregnant. She advised them to always Say No and focus on their school work and enjoy their childhood. She mentioned that there is no shortcuts to life and that one has to go through every stage. One cannot jump from being a child to a mother just like that,as they have to grow be teenagers, become youth and then adults. Lorna mentioned sex at their age and outside of marriage is a sin and therefore at their age they should Abstain from Sex and not even think about condoms. Conclusion Lorna thanked them for being a good class and urged them to remain disciplined and both the girls and boys to keep their skirts down, boys close their zips at all times and also report any sexual harassment cases , bad touches. She advised them to find someone they can talk to or open up to and not just keep quiet as keeping silent can make things worse.
