Notes
Overview Lorna went to this village to teach on Early Pregnancy; it’s causes, dangers and possible solutions. Overview Lorna went here to introduce the lesson on early pregnancy , it’s presence in this village, causes, dangers and solutions. The community members however told Lorna at the beginning of the lesson that they were going for a funeral of 2 of their members who passed on the bus collision with a commuter taxi on Sunday. Lorna asked if she could teach for an hour and then let them go the funeral and they agreed. Lorna introduced the topic of the day and asked them if it was even a problem in this community and she also added that even though it was not a problem, it is better to prevent than to cure. The community members however responded that it is a big problem and even started giving examples of the homes they know that their children have been involved in cases of early pregnancy. One of the stories they mentioned Isa a renowned chairman who was involved with 3 children ages 12, 13 and 15. However on the one of 15 years the mother of the child found them in the act and made an alarm but Isa was quick to tell the mother of the girl to keep quiet and that there was no need to make an alarm and that they can settle the matter quietly. However the community had ,had enough and this time they were not going to let it go and even the previous victims parents now came out to report Isa. The saddening part of this story is Isa had HIV and so did the other children he had defiled. Lorna stopped them there and asked how did Isa manage to convince these children without their parents knowing. They said he had a money trick whereby, he gave the children shillings 10,000 and told them to keep it for him and then after a few days he would tell them to use the money and that if it was over, he added them more. Another example was of a man who sold off his daughter for 1.5 million Ugandan shillings however thankfully, this man to whom the 14 year old was sold returned her saying he did not want issues with the police. Another example was of a man who gave everything to his daughter but still got pregnant. Lorna then asked them what could be the problem then is it the parents fault or children’s fault?. Where is the cause of the problem?. The chairman Tuli said that our children admire lots of things citing back to the example of Isa , another lady mentioned that parents are the ones sending off their children to men that they go ahead and tell them go and bring sugar , bread which was very sad. Another lady said honestly children have defeated them however Harriet said this is not one sided and that the parents should have the upper hand. Lorna mentioned that the challenge however is most times parents start talking to their children later on about sex which is not good. She mentioned that parents should stop thinking their children don’t know what is going on and therefore it is there responsibility to see to it that their children understand sexuality. She mentioned that when girls start their menstruation they need to tell them if they messed around they could get pregnant and not only that but also get other diseases. The mistake we make is not assuming our responsibility and assuming someone will do it for us and yet it is the parents primary role to bring ups their children in a godly manner. They also mentioned poverty as the major cause of early pregnancy. Lorna reechoed bribery as another cause and pointed to the example of Isa where she said the parents of the other 2 girls had kept quiet because Isa had bribed them to keep quiet. Lorna said this is wrong and it should stop and that these culprits needed to be arrested and imprisoned. As they were still continuing their discussion , an ambulance passed on the road carrying one of the accident victims body. The women started getting emotional and Lorna told them that they will start from here next week. Conclusion Lorna asked one of the ladies to close the meeting with a word of prayer so that people can go. After the prayer the chairman said he felt this prayer deep down in his heart which was a good thing. Lorna encouraged them to be strong and may God comfort them and she left for Jinja.
