Notes
While in the village, Tom first met with two committee members and discussed about the progress of the program in the upper section of the village. One committee member gave a brief report about his section and squad there were two residents who had started digging the pits for their latrines and one had constructed a shower facility. He also said there were two residents across the road on the opposite village that have also started on their pits. After that short report, Tom and the two committee members moved around the village checking on improvements being made in sanitation and hygiene. In the first two homes neighboring one of the committee members, they found two men constructing a latrine. Tom thanked and appreciated the old man for working hard to improve on the sanitation and hygiene of his home. He had also cut poles for a dish rack and Tom advised him on constructing the new model dish rack. In the next home, there was a new permanent latrine. Tom also advised the committee members to encourage the residents on putting a trench around the latrine to control running water as it could damage the walls. After they moved in other homes and on three homes, they found when residents had started on the pits. The committee members encouraged and advised the residents on the pits they were digging. One of the pits was much wider which would make constructing the floor much harder while the other pit was narrow and smaller. The committee members advised the resident to increase on the size of the pit as well as continue digging to increase on the depth. The committee members also encouraged residents on standards especially when it comes to the shower facilities. They also encouraged the residents on using cement to construct the showers as the cement helps in holding the structure in place for along time. Tom was also encouraging the residents on contributing money for the iron sheets and roofing their latrine would be one of the ways to keep them longer and stronger.
