Healthy and Safe Kitchens
Notes
Suzan went to the upper side of the village to monitor the maintenance of the healthy and safe kitchens facilities and the smearing of the buildings. When she got there she found a group of women and the program chairperson madam Dinah coming from their gardens with hoes and some food in the baskets. Suzan was warmly welcomed to the village and the ladies first went to their homes to prepare for the meeting. The chairperson first discussed a few issues concerning the program activities especially the challenges they faced while using the stoves, saying that the stoves were not cooking as expected because some members had built the stoves at the wrong side in the kitchens making it hard for the winds to blow in while others failed to repair their cracked stoves because they didn’t know how it was done. As they discussed, more members kept on coming to the meeting and together exchanged different views on how to overcome the challenges they faced concerning the stoves. It was agreed that for those who had well maintained stoves which were cooking well, to find time and show the other members how to repair their stoves and make them cook effectively. Later on they got up and moved around the village visiting home to home while monitoring different facilities such as the kitchens, shower areas, pit latrines, rubbish pits, dish racks and stoves. About 23 members had stoves and were using them according to the program committee chairperson although most of them needed to improve on their sanitation and hygiene as well as repair their broken facilities such as the dish racks, shower areas and kitchens. Suzan thanked all the members for participating in the program activities and requested them to continue building the stoves for their members at the neighboring villages plus those who didn’t get chance to get stoves. This was also up to them to decide weather they built the stoves for money or not because building stoves became one of their income generating activities especially for the youth who were still energetic. Suzan reminded the program leaders to always work together with their members for this would be more effective in the developments of their community. Finally the meeting came to an end with the members thanking Suzan for the visit and ideas shared.
