Notes
Alex and Steven went to Nawaibete village to meet with the water and sanitation committees and encourage them as well reminding them of their roles. A few months ago we received news from this village through a Kibo staff Manuela who has been very active in this village that there were serious declines in the sanitation levels in this community and also there was a problem that a water committee was being accused of mishandling of the borehole funds. Many of the water user had refused to pay the quarterly charges towards the borehole. Many of the community members were demanding for accountability of the first money that was contributed amounting to 300,000sh. Most of them were asking why they have to pay more money and yet their borehole had never been repaired meaning that they still have the initial money that were in place before the borehole was commissioned. Manuela then called for a meeting of all the water users and the committee and all was sorted. She even went a head to revive sanitation to go around and tell every one to improve the sanitation facilities. However the community also asked that Alex and the water source to come back and remind all the people of their roles and responsibilities and also do another training with the water committee. Alex and Steve checked on the borehole and found out that it needs new bearings. Also the borehole fence needs to replace some old poles. The borehole compound was very clean. While in the meeting with water committee, he reminded them that it was very important that they encourage all their community water users to obey the borehole rules and regulations. They were told not to be intimidated by any one since all the district officials know them and all the important roles to take good care of the borehole. They were told that ownership of their borehole begins with the committee and that they should love their borehole before the rest of the community can follow. Checking on a few homes, it was noted that the homes were recently smeared and looked very clean. The sanitation and water committee members testified that Manuela was very hard on them and that now they are telling everyone what to do. All the facilities were looking very strong and meeting the standard. They were told to make sure that it’s a daily thing to encourage their community members on what to do and replacing old facilities since it’s their responsibility. Their borehole account has got 375,000sh and have requested Kibo to fix for them the new bearings since they have their money to buy the bearings.
